What Is the Best Chemical-Free Conditioner?

There's no such thing as a truly chemical-free conditioner. Everything in a bottle, even water, is a chemical. What you're really after is a conditioner free of harsh chemicals: the sulfates, silicones, and synthetic fragrances that can weigh your hair down and irritate your scalp.

The best "chemical-free" conditioner is really the best clean conditioner: one without sulfates, silicones, or synthetic fragrance, built instead on botanical oils, conditioning proteins, and real moisture.

Skip these three harsh chemicals:

  • Sulfates. The harsh cleansers behind most shampoo lather. They strip natural oils and leave hair drier, especially if it's already dry or color-treated.

  • Silicones. Feel silky at first, but they build up fast and can coat hair instead of nourishing it. Fine hair and sensitive scalps usually notice first.

  • Synthetic fragrance. A common trigger for scalp irritation. Skip it and you skip the guesswork.

Look for these instead:

  • Botanical oils and butters like babassu oil and cupuaçu butter, which lock in moisture without heaviness.

  • Conditioning proteins like hydrolyzed jojoba protein, which strengthen the hair shaft for smoother, more manageable strands.

  • Moisture magnets like glycerin and panthenol, which pull in hydration and keep it there instead of masking dryness with a heavy coating.¹

None of this is universal. Your hair, your call. But skip the harsh chemicals and lean on the second three, and you're already ahead of most of the shampoo aisle.

The Condish is built this way on purpose. No sulfates, no silicones, no synthetic fragrance, just cupuaçu butter, babassu oil, and hydrolyzed jojoba protein doing the work.
